    Favored Genres

Post by TGDemento on Sat Oct 14, 2017 9:26 am

I'm rather curious as to everyone's favored RP and writing genres.

I am a big fan of Sci-fi as a genre. The idea of futuristic worlds, traveling through space, interacting with amazing and wonderful creatures and entities. It's my favorite thing to think about.

I like Fantasy too, but in a lot of cases I just add magic usage to Sci-Fi stuff and I'm happy.

Pure Romantic and Dramatic works are too... Mundane? And I don't mean that in a snobbish way, I mean that literally any not containing some fantastical element doesn't interest me. I don't like normal everyday life stuff, you know?

    I guess that's why I'm here, really.

    My top 3

I'm sure for you it will come as no surprise that I'm a fan of Horror. It doesn't seem to matter if it's poor quality horror or has me crying as I run my way to the restroom, I love it all.

I'm somewhat picky on Sci-fi, as I have come across some works in this genre I just don't like. I am however all for a futuristic world, especially if it's heavily influenced by fantasy elements because I love Fantasy almost as much as I love Horror.

The idea of a Post-Apocalyptic theme to pretty much everything is intriguing to me. Almost all story ideas I have are based around or just after the Apocalypse.

Romance is best used as secondary/tertiary/etc branches of writing. Honestly, yeah, I wanna see the characters hook up with their love interest, but that's not the main goal of the story (unless you're talking 50 Shades of Gray or some Twilight bs)

Drama is actually inevitable, because Drama is all conflict encountered, and who is going to deny they don't love seeing the characters struggle to get to their end game? No struggle = no story. Pairs into the story along side Action and Adventure.

A Post-Apocalyptic Sci-fi Fantasy world filled with Horror at every turn is all sorts of action, adventure, and drama.

I totally agree with you about romance. Trying to write a pure love story is just not interesting enough to me. Without a more interesting backdrop to play against, I just can't get into it.

But with the right backdrop, a romantic storyline is so much fun to write. I especially like ones involving star-crossed lovers or unrequited love. Anything where there are major obstacles to them being together, or some challenge that keeps them from trying to go for it, as it were. (I actually really like the anime School Rumble for that very reason.)

Xel, especially, pretty much exclusively has relationships that either end with tragedy, or more often, his lover trying to kill him. Lot's of pissed off Ex's there. Most of them pretty deadly, too.

I've never had the chance to play a post-apocalyptic RP before. Most of the stuff I've been involved in has been sort of fantasy, Mostly magic kingdoms at war, and at one time a minor horror theme (It was vampires and demons and stuff. I chose to be a robot. Good times.) Due to the adaptive nature of most of my characters, I can alter my style to fit most themes, but I honestly tend more toward the supernatural or futuristic.

Like I said, I come here to get away from real life.

You know what could be fun? In any story, just randomly toss in one excessively romanticized character that seems to have absolutely no reason to be there but somehow has every reason to be there as well. Like Rambo if he were a God of Sex or something (if that makes sense) - super buff and oozing vanity, he runs amok to save all the damsels in distress and winks at everyone and everything, especially his own reflection.

I only had time to read "A Sight for Sore Eye" last night, but that's all it took to get me hooked. Xel is a fantastic character and I am eager to read the others just as soon as possible.

I appreciate you saying that. Xel is a character that means a great deal to me.

As far as excessively romantic characters, anime likes to do that alot. Like, the one girl on the battlefield who is obsessed with finding a boyfriend. In fact, Miroku from inuyasha comes to mind as that sort of character. But you'll notice that even with him, they knew when to pull back on the pervieness.

It's a careful path to tread. You have to make sure that a storyline doesn't get muddled by excessive romantic prose. I've seen RPs that have gotten derailed due to too much flirting.

As long as things are kept simple, though, it can be a lot of fun.

Now let me ask this, do you prefer interpersonal conflict or more primal, life or death kind of conflict?

Oh that's a tough one, I love both of those. I honestly can't decide between the two because I love a story where there's both involved.

I've actually been working on a story where the main character has interpersonal conflict as well as faces primal conflict.

Yeah, i kind of feel the same way, but most of the time for me, interpersonal conflict takes a back-seat to the fight for one's life. I mean, ideally, it should be the other way around. I feel like the Michael Bay of writers making complicated emotions disappear so I can resume shooting at my characters.
